We all have a story. One that begins at birth and ends at death, but that usually isn’t the story we live in. For most of us, the story begins with trauma, abuse, neglect, bullying, the list goes on. The story we tend to tell ourselves is the one that somehow puts us in a place of not enough/unworthy.
Most of us walk around carrying pain, burdens and shame that were casted upon us. Whichever way it came, it is NOT our fault.
The story we tell ourselves isn’t the truth. We are more than a story. We can change, evolve and transform. It took a long time to stare at myself in the mirror and face my truths. I am worthy, I am enough, and I am not alone. All the other parts are lies someone told me, made me believe.
I read a quote the other day that gave me one of those ah ha moments. “If they feel the need to belittle you, they are already below you.” Don’t allow people to steal from you, not even yourself! You are worthy!
The hardest work involves taking ownership and accountability for the actions you take, the decisions you make and those you don’t. If I point blame at someone else, it’s usually because I see something in myself I don’t like. The mirror always points back to me. Our story changes the second we take ownership of who we are, what we allow and accept into our lives.
This week I spent time to reflect on a beautiful young woman’s story. I looked at her in admiration of her bravery and courage. She spoke of trauma she experienced and how it has impacted her life. I will never forget the moment she asked herself, “whose peace am I really keeping?”.
I have spent my life protecting people who’ve hurt me, when they were the ones that should have been protecting me. It almost killed me keeping their peace.
We are all survivors of some unfortunate circumstance. That circumstance is only a part of our story. So the next time you find yourself back in your “story”, ask yourself “whose peace am I really keeping?”.
If it doesn’t serve you, let it go. Make space for something better trying to make its way to you. The righteous cause shall always be victorious.
